I arrived in London (from Split, Croatia) on July 9th, and I spent a couple days in London catching up with a few friends in the city before taking off on my tour through England, Scotland and Ireland. I spent my first evening with my friend Adam who happened to also be visiting London at the same time as me. The following day was spent with my friend Madeleine, who I’ve been good friends with for the past 15 years, and who also now lives in London. I hadn’t seen her in about a year so it was amazing to spend the day with her!
The last friend I spent time with was my friend Rob, who I met during my Croatian Island tour. Other than catching up with friends, I didn’t do much touring, and it was a much needed break! I’ll be in London for 5 days after my tour so I’m saving the touring for then!
On July 12th I joined my new tour group and we left early in the morning for Liverpool, the hometown of the Beatles and the headquarters of the Titanic.
The majority of my afternoon was Beatles themed, and my first stop was the famous Penny Lane (from the Beatles Song “Penny Lane”):
Liverpool has a pretty awesome Beatles museum, where they display the Beatles story chronologically, starting with how Paul and George first met, describing the process of how the famous 4 came together, the changes in band members (ie. when Pete Best was replaced by Ringo Starr), and finally the breakup of the band (on April 10th, 1970) after only 8 years. There are photos, artefacts, recreations of significant locations, and lots of plaques with information.
One room was a recreation of The Cavern, a famous pub where the Beatles played 292 times (their last performance there was August 3rd, 1963). The Cavern is famous for being the location where the Beatles were discovered and made a name for themselves, and whenever they played so many fans came that the heat from all the bodies caused condensation to form on the walls.
The museum was awesome, I really enjoyed it and I learned so much about the Beatles history.
That evening we went to the famous Cavern Club to see the place where the Beatles began! (I do believe the original Cavern was closed in the 70s but then reopened under the name Cavern Club)
It was really cool to hang out in the pub that made the Beatles famous, and that hosted so many other famous bands in history.
In addition to everything Beatles themed, the city of Liverpool is very pretty, and is right along the water. Walking through the waterfront is very nice and scenic.
One thing that’s super cool is that you can rent apartment boats in the shape of different themes, like the Yellow Submarine and the Titanic.
Overall I liked Liverpool, I thought it was a really cute city, but most importantly, I really enjoyed learning more about the Beatles!
