I’m a little bit behind on my blog, I have been sailing through the Croatian islands for the past week and I’ve had very limited internet! The Croatian islands (and coastline) have been amazing, and in this blog post I’ll talk about Korcula and Trstenik.
On June 30th we sailed to Korcula, but on the way we had the whole morning to hang out on the deck of the boat and to swim in the beautiful waters!
Korcula: Korcula is an island of Croatia, most famous for it’s association with Marco Polo. It has been said that this famous adventurer was born in Korcula, and because of this you can find many Marco Polo souvenirs, t-shirts, cafes, etc. Approaching Korcula by boat you can see the outer city walls, which protect the city from the strong winds.
The entrance to the walled inner city:
Once you enter the inner walls the streets are narrow and cute, with lots of cafes, shops and restaurants.
The house in the photo below is said to have been Marco Polo’s house:
There are also many cafes along the water, with beautiful views.
To take a relaxing break from touring the city we went to a pretty cool bar. It was located at the top of a tower, where they used a pulley system to bring the drinks up to the top.
The views were amazing!
By night-time, the whole town lit up for a big festival. It was June 30th, and they were celebrating the half year. We saw loads of people dressed up in costumes, there was music, and the whole town was just bustling with people!
There was even TV crews for news coverage of the event:
Trstenik: We set sail to Trstenik, a very very small town with a beautiful harbour. We sailed all morning to get there, and along the way we had beautiful views of the Croatian shoreline.
Also before docking in Trstenik our boat stopped so we could have some swim time. We took this chance to swim from the boat to a small beach.
We arrived in Trstenik in the afternoon. The town is so small that with the 3 Contiki boats (about 100 people) we probably came close to doubling the population! The town didn’t even have a pharmacy! This made the town feel really authentic and untouched. The harbour and beaches were really beautiful!
We walked up the street to a small beach which was breathtakingly beautiful.
I think Trstenik was one of my favourite destinations in Croatia, mainly because of how small it was and how untouched and beautiful the scenery was. Everywhere else so far has seemed pretty touristy. Trstenik would be a perfect place for a quiet little beach vacation.
